Inevitably with the arrival of warmer weather in Southwest Montana comes a noticeable increase in road construction, repair and upgrades all across the Treasure State.  This year, however, things here in Southwest Montana will really kick in this week as the Montana Department of Transportation along with Sletten Construction will begin rehabilitating 7 bridges in and around the Butte area on Interstates 15 and 90.  Here are the bridges that will be affected and what the Montana Department of Transportation says you can expect.

  • I-15 German Gulch Road Exit 119will have its bridge deck (driving surface) replaced which will require a full closure of the bridge.
  • I-15/I-190 Montana Street Exit 126 (north and southbound bridges)will have their concrete substructure rehabilitated. This work will impact traffic on Montana Street but should not impact traffic on the interstate.
  • I-15/I-90 Harrison Avenue Exit 127 (north and southbound bridges)will have their concrete substructure rehabilitated. This work will impact traffic on Harrison Avenue but should not impact traffic on the interstate.
  • I-90 Burlington Streetwill have its concrete substructure rehabilitated. This work will impact traffic on the interstate but should not impact traffic on Burlington Street.
  • I-90 Homestake Pass Road Exit 233will have its bridge deck rehabilitated and be reduced to one lane over the interstate.

The German Gulch Road Bridge is expected to be closed for around two months, starting in July.  Work on all the bridges is anticipated to be completed in late fall.

These bridges were built between 1961 and 1966 and are in need of repair and routine maintenance. The MDT tells us that this project will provide cost-effective improvements that will enhance safety features, provide a smoother driving surface, and increase the service life of the bridges.
