When it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, few places in America do it bigger than Butte. Once a booming mining town with deep Irish roots, Butte transforms into a sea of green each year, welcoming thousands to one of the nation’s most unforgettable parades.

As the Royal Motel fell today to the hands of a local construction crew on the corner of Harrison Avenue and Elizabeth Warren,, the face of this particular stretch of Harrisonuth Avenue has changed just a little bit more. I'm talking about the stretch between Holmes Avenue, where Thrirftway and Silver Bow Pizza stand, south to Elizabeth Warren, site of today's demolition. Remember the businesses that used to stand on some of these spots? How many can you name?

Another old Butte landmark on Harrison Avenue came down at the hands of construction crews in Butte on Wednesday afternoon as the once regal Royal Motel underwent demolition on South Harrison Avenue.

If there's one thing that makes folks here in Montana cringe, it's when someone mispronounces one of our town's names, especially if we're from that particular town.

Butte has always been known for extravagant decorations, especially around Christmastime. We've talked about the mine headframes and the lengths that the miners would go to in order to have the best-lit frame on the hill. There's the historic Meaderville light display that we now get to enjoy every season at the ice-skating rink behind the Racetrack Volunteer Fire Department Hall. And, of course, every year there are exquisite residential light displays that add an extra few watts every winter to Butte's already glowing night shine. But for the past couple of years there has been one particular display here in Butte that is definitely worth checking out.

This Saturday, the Spirit of Columbia Gardens Carousel will have Santa Claus on hand to greet Butte's children and get their wish lists from noon to 3 and the entire family is invited. The Carousel will be running, and the gift shop will be open and is a great place to find Butte-related items that are perfect for out-of-town friends and family members.
