Oredigger Women’s Basketball Entertains Area Elementary Students
There were some plays run and some baskets made but the Montana Tech women's basketball season-opening intra-squad scrimmage was more about making new, young friends and fans as the Orediggers welcomed area 4th, 5th and 6th graders to Kelvin Sampson Court for an entertaining couple of hours on Wednesday morning for "Elementary School Day."
The Diggs were joined by students from West, Kennedy, Emerson, Margaret Leary, Ramsay, Hillcrest, Whittier and the Butte Pathways Academy for a series of five minute intra-squad scrimmages which were broken up by contests, dancing and the occasional game of Teacher's Musical Chairs.
One of the highlights of the morning and something that has become tradition with the elementary students is the end of the scrimmage where the kids and teachers get to dance along with the players to such crowd favorites as the Cha Cha Slide and the Macarena.
Of course, Baby Shark is always a crowd favorite on Elementary School Day.
Another popular event is where the Oredigger players select their favorite signs from the crowd and meet the young artists behind them as Butte's Brooke Badovinac shows here.
Head Coach Jeff Graham said that the focus of this event is simply community. "It's so fun to see the kids," Graham said. "The players bond with the kids and the community, we get to know them early in the year. Hopefully it attracts some more fans, it's just my favorite day of the year."
The Orediggers asked to thank Amanda Badovinac, Jeremy Whitlock, the Butte School District, Sodexo and Harrington Bottling Company of Butte for all of their help and planning with Elementary School Day.
