Orediggers cruise to Homecoming win in front of distinguished alumni
The Montana Tech Orediggers celebrated Homecoming and honored several distinguished alumni on Saturday and it was the football team, the offense in particular, that stole the show in front of over 4,300 incredibly loud fans on Saturday at Bob Green Field. The Orediggers blasted Eastern Oregon 49-31.
In fact, Bob Green himself was on hand to not only receive the university's highest honor, but to watch the team that he took to the National Championship game back in 1996 score touchdowns on its first five possessions. Also, on hand to witness the Oredigger attack was former fullback Josh Vincent, a key member of that 1996 team who has gone on to even greater success through his firm Water and Environmental Technologies. Even Vincent had to admire the day Blake Counts had on the ground. Counts torched the Mountaineers defense for 122 yards and three touchdowns, earning player-of-the-game honors. Oredigger quarterback Blake Thielen didn't have too shabby of an outing either, going 14 of 17 for 224 yards and two touchdowns. The defense was led by Jadyn Downs who had 11 tackles while Cole Wyant was right behind with 10.
With the win, the Orediggers improve to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Frontier Conference and will look to keep the momentum going next Saturday, but they will have their hands full. The Orediggers will entertain the #10 College of Idaho Yotes with a special 12pm kickoff. Advance tickets are available here. Pregame festivities will get underway with Kegs and Eggs starting at 8am at Metals Sports Bar and Grill on the corner of Park and Main.
