What are sister cities?
In 1956, President Eisenhower started a program called Sister Cities International.
This initiative was to help create peace and prosperity between two places with zero things in common to share their cultures. This idea was to help lower the likelihood of conflicts in the future.
It makes a lot of sense. If you could connect two places with no relationship with each other and foster meaningful communication, the chances of them resolving conflicts would be easier.
Does Bozeman have a sister city? We do, and it's interesting how the relationship came to be.
Bozeman's Sister City
In 2006, Bozeman officially became a sister city to Muren, Mongolia.
Why? We share similar features.
Muren, Mongolia, has sprawling mountains and beautiful landscapes like Bozeman. The cities are comparable in size.
Sister cities often share high school exchange students and host expeditions for each other.
It's a beautiful relationship.

Bozeman isn't the only spot that has an international sister city.
Livingston has been a sister city to Naganohara, Japan, since the early 90s.
Butte is a sister city to Atensteig, Germany.
For over 30 years, Missoula has been a sister city to Palmerston, New Zealand. They've exchanged economic partnerships and educational experiences.
Not many people know about these unique communities with ties to Montana cities.
